What to look for in a program

Accreditation

CCNE or ACEN accredited. Non-accredited programs may not qualify you for board certification — check before applying.

Pass rates

Ask for the program’s ANCC/AANP first-time pass rate. National average is ~82–85%. Below 70% is a red flag.

Clinical placement

Does the program help find clinical sites, or is it on you? “Self-placement” programs can add months of delays.

Online vs hybrid

Didactic online + in-person clinicals is the most common format. Fully online programs still require local clinical hours.

Clinical hours

Minimum 500 direct psychiatric hours. More is better — 700+ makes you a stronger new grad.

Cost & ROI

PMHNP median salary is $130K–$160K+. Even at $80K tuition, most grads recover the investment within 1–2 years of practice.
